Census of population scheduled for October 2011

A census of population and housing will be conducted in Romania, in 2011, the president of the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Vergil Voineagu, announced, yesterday, in an information session regarding this census, organized by the Senate’s Sub-committee for Population and Development in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and INS. The census will be initiated, most likely, next October and will last approximately two weeks, and all EU member states are required to conduct a similar count next year. “Romania is the sixth European state, as regards the number of inhabitants, and it has to take part in this, alongside other countries. Political and social recovery policies need to be drafted on a scientific basis,” the head of INS stated.

The total cost of the census is estimated at approximately EUR 500 M, that is, EUR 1.8 per capita. The first results of the census will be released in March 2012, the preliminary data in June 2012, and the final results will be published by 2013. According to the latest census of population, conducted in 2002, Romania’s population amounted to 21.5 million inhabitants.
