Champions League: FC Copenhagen through, Spurs, Schalke, United on top

FC Copenhagen made it through to the last 16 while Tottenham Hotspur FC, FC Schalke 04 and Manchester United FC won their groups and SL Benfica earned a UEFA Europa League berth. FC Copenhagen clinched the only available place in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on offer as Groups A to D concluded on Tuesday night. UEFA.com has video highlights from all eight games UEFA. Com informs.

Seven teams from these groups already knew they would enter the last-16 draw on 17 December and Copenhagen 3-1 win against Panathinaikos FC resolved the remaining issue, leaving them out of reach of FC Rubin Kazan, who in any case lost 2-0 at FC Barcelona. In three other groups, Tottenham Hotspur FC, FC Schalke 04 and Manchester United FC claimed first place while SL Benfica and Rubin will both enter the UEFA Europa League round of 32 after being confirmed in third in their sections. The remaining four groups, with three round of 16 places undecided, concluded on Wednesday evening.

FC Copenhagen will warm themselves with thoughts of the UEFA Champions League knockout stage this winter after signing off for the year with a win against Panathinaikos FC that confirmed second spot in Group D. Ståle Solbakken’s charges knew victory would enshrine them as the first Danish club to reach the last 16 in the UEFA Champions League era and they got off the mark when Martin Vingaard finished from outside the area in the 26th minute. Certain of finishing bottom of the section, the visitors responded with a couple of dangerous moments, but Jesper Grønkjær eased FCK nerves with a 50th-minute penalty before a Djibril Cissé own goal rounded off a memorable night, Cédric Kanté’s late consolation notwithstanding.
