Oprescu wants 2020 Olympics in Bucharest

Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu believes that organising the 2020 Olympics in Bucharest might get Romania out of the economic crisis, by attracting many foreign investors to the country. “I think this could be a project of national unity. Just imagine what a huge image booster it would be for Romania and Bucharest if this idea coagulated and produced the candidacy. I started making lists of great athletes, with outstanding results at the Olympics, who are living abroad now,” Oprescu said.

The mayor even ordered an opinion poll, which proved Romanians are supporting his project. “85 pc of Bucharest inhabitants completely agree to this project. During the poll, 3,700 people were consulted by telephone in Bucharest and 3,200 across the country. 93 pc of Romanians accept the idea, at country level, and 85 pc in Bucharest,” he said.

Answering a question about how he will find financing for the project, the mayor said that he already started to meet people who can direct him to lobby firms. “It is out of question, now, to raise taxes in view of the Olympics. The government must contribute, and I don’t think they are so insane (to refuse it), starting with the prime minister,” Oprescu added.
