COSR: ‘Romania cannot host Olympic Games in 2020’

Specialists are sceptical when it comes to Bucharest General Mayor Sorin Oprescu’s desire to organize the 2020 Olympics. The Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) is convinced that it is basically impossible for Romania to host the Olympic Games in 2020.

“We’re talking about investments running into the billions of Euros. It’s already too late to file our bid to host the 2020 Olympics. The four finalists of the race to host the Olympics will be nominated in 2013. We would have at our disposal only a year to solve all problems. Currently we have no Olympic stadium. It was a big mistake to build a football stadium instead. I don’t know if another stadium of this size could be built in Bucharest. The Olympics call for a stadium with a capacity of 70-80 thousand seats. At least another stadium is needed. Moreover, we would also need gyms, an Olympic swimming pool. We would have to be able to host the football, basketball, volleyball and handball finals… We would also have to ensure transportation. We need a light rail from the airport to the city. In the absence of all that nobody takes you into account,” COSR President Octavian Morariu stated for ‘Puterea’ daily.

Moreover, Morariu claims that without the government’s involvement the General Mayor’s initiative has no value. “It’s not enough for the Bucharest Mayor to want to host the Olympics. That cannot be done without the government’s involvement. One can’t discuss this in so simple terms. I personally have nothing against the initiative but we’ll end up like Greece which is now looking on as its marvelous Olympic centre is going into disrepair,” Morariu explained.

Bucharest General Mayor Sorin Oprescu launched in August the idea of organizing the 2020 Olympics, an idea that he recently reiterated invoking the Bucharesters’ support for such a project but also the fact that such an initiative would draw numerous investors.

Here are the cities that have filed their bids to host the Olympic Games in 2020: Durban (South Africa), Rabat (Morocco), New Delhi (India), Busan (South Korea), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Hiroshima and Tokyo (Japan), Baku (Azerbaijan), Istanbul (Turkey), Rome (Italy), Budapest (Hungary), Madrid (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), Sankt Petersburg (Russia), Monterrey and Guadalajara (Mexico), Toronto (Canada) and Brisbane (Australia). The winner will be announced by mid-2013 in Buenos Aires.
