According to sources who attended, on Monday, the meeting of the Social Democratic Party (PSD)’s National Standing Bureau (BPN), Mircea Geoana presented the reasons which led to his public outburst in reference to the presidential elections, adding he was sorry for what had occurred between him and the party president, Victor Ponta. One of Geoana’s most vehement critics was the party’s honourary leader, Ion Iliescu. “Mircea, you are, now, beyond pitiful!” Iliescu allegedly told Geoana, according to Realitatea.net. “I don’t think a real man would have put up with that. I would have been on my feet and out the door,” a Social-Democrat leader, one of Geoana’s supporters at the PSD congress, stated. Nevertheless, Iliescu was among those who proposed a more lenient sanction for the Speaker of the Senate, voting for a “final warning”, instead of having him suspended from the party, as proposed by Victor Ponta. In response, the PSD president argued he needed a validation of the party’s support. In the end, Geoana was suspended for six months from the party.
