Romania and US hold new round of missile shield negotiations

The fourth round of bilateral negotiations over Romania’s participation in the missile defence system started on Tuesday in Bucharest. The Romanian delegation is led by Bogdan Aurescu while the American one is led by Frank Rose, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Arms Control. According to a communiqué that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remitted on Monday to the press, the Romanian delegation has an inter-institutional character.

“Against the backdrop of the previous rounds’ positive results, the two delegations will continue to negotiate the juridical framework that will regulate bilateral cooperation in the missile defense domain. Likewise, the two heads of delegation will tackle, during a meeting, security issues of bilateral interest,” the communiqué shows.

On February 4, 2010, Romania’s Supreme Defence Council approved the acceptance of US President Barack Obama’s invitation for Romania to take part in the phased, adaptive approach to the missile defence system in Europe.
