Sibiu head prosecutor indicted for influence peddling

DNA prosecutors indicted, last week, the head prosecutor of the Sibiu Tribunal, Florin Nicusor Apostu – now under preventive arrest – for 7 counts of bribe taking, two of influence peddling and 56 counts of forgery and use of forged documents. Businessman Ilie Carabulea, the manager of transport company Atlassib, will face the court in the same case.

According to transcripts mentioned by the act of indictment, quoted by Hotnews, the head prosecutor attempted to arrange a meeting between Carabulea and Romania’s general prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi, via her father, who was an acquaintance of the Sibiu magistrate. Carabulea hoped he could convince the general prosecutor to initiate an appeal in the interest of the law, against a lawsuit lost by one of his companies.

Prosecutors say that “the father of the general prosecutor of Romania refused to get directly involved in mediating a contact” and suggested Apostu to plead his case in a letter to Kovesi. The Sibiu head prosecutor apparently had less influence than he expected, as the general prosecutor refused to meet Carabulea.
