Most children, ignorant about nutrition requirements

Children remain ignorant about the food groups they should consume, daily, are confused about nutritious substances and are increasingly drawn to fast-foods, “Evenimentul Zilei” reports. For example, young people should know that the highest source of proteins is the meat, milk and eggs food group. Nevertheless, almost 50 per cent of pupils aged 10 to 18 think that the best sources of proteins are fruit and vegetables, according to a study conducted by the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports (MECTS), on a representative sample at national level. As regards the number of overweight and obese children, Romania is doing much better than other developed countries. “Only 7 per cent of pupils in grades 5 to 8 have weight problems, while, in better developed countries, like the UK, the average is 30 per cent,” Raluca Teodoru, the coordinator of the study, argued.
