Actress Rodica Tapalaga dies at 71

Actress Rodica Tapalaga died on Saturday at 71 after a long suffering. The actress’s son, Barbu Popescu, told Realitatea TV yesterday that the actress had been suffering from several ailments and she had been hospitalized in the last few months.


Admirers and colleagues of the artist can pay their respects at Coltea Church, where Tapalaga’s body will rest until Tuesday morning. She will be buried later on Tuesday in a private ceremony, as demanded by the family.


The actress was born at Dorohoi, Botosani County on January 12, 1939. A graduate of the I.L. Caragiale Theatre and Film Art, she has had numerous theatre roles, especially in comedies, at the Craiova National Theatre, the Nottara Theatre and mostly at Lucia Sturdza Bulandra Theatre, where she began work in 1981 and continued until this year.


She has also starred in numerous movies, working with directors such as Dan Pita, Mircea Veroiu, Gheorghe Vitanidis, Mircea Daneliuc and many others.


In 2001, she was granted a lifetime achievement award by the National Theatre Guild, while in De­cember 2009, at the Ion Dacian Operetta Theatre in the capital, she was granted a special award for art and culture. She was married to stage designer Ion Po­pescu Udriste, with whom she had a son. She was the sister of celebrated actor Stefan Tapalaga, who died in 1994.
