Boxing: Tavoris Cloud defends IBF title

Tavoris Cloud successfully defended his IBF light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision against Fulgencio Zuniga, and Odlanier Solis defeated Ray Austin via disqualification in their WBC elimination bout in Miami, Florida, Eurosport informs.

Cloud (22-0) utterly dominated Zuniga (24-5) throughout the 12-round contest, securing emphatic 117-108, 118-108, and 116-109 scores from the judges.

The 28-year-old American dropped Zuniga in the third round, but rarely looked like knocking out the game Colombian as he failed to get the KO for a fourth consecutive fight. “I know I had better skills,” Cloud said, “but he obviously came into this fight in good shape. I only give myself a ‘B’ performance tonight. I will tell you I took this man seriously because I knew he was going to come to fight.”

In the night’s co-main event, Ray Austin’s disqualification – three minutes into the 10th round – handed victory to Cuba’s Olympic gold-medallist Odlanier Solis.

Solis controlled the fight from the off, dropping Austin with a sharp left in the fifth round, before landing a series of vicious combinations in the 10th.

Austin resorted to constant holding in a bid to prolong the bout, and referee Tommy Kimmons had little choice but to disqualify the 40-year-old American after a weary charge almost knocked Solis out of the ring. “I could have knocked him out or made him look ridiculous, and I made him look ridiculous,” said Solis, who improved his record to 17 wins for no losses. “He never hurt me at all.”
