Inter beats TP Mazembe Englebert 3-0 to secure world crown

ABU DHABI – UEFA Champions League holders FC Internazionale Milano, with Cristian Chivu in the field, added the FIFA Club World Cup to their 2010 collection of silverware after beating TP Mazembe Englebert of DR Congo 3-0 in the Abu Dhabi showpiece.

“I’m really happy,” said coach Rafael Benitez, quoted by uefa.com. “This victory is for all the people who kept their trust in us in recent months. We just did what we wanted to do. We showed no fear, passed the ball well and were accurate on the counterattack. Now the party can start for us.”

The Nerazzurri, who also won the Scudetto, the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup this year, took the lead on 13 minutes when Goran Pandev ran on to Samuel Eto’o’s one-touch pass before beating Robert Muteba Kidiaba with a side-footed finish.

They were two to the good four minutes later. Captain Javier Zanetti found space on the right and crossed towards the centre for Pandev, whose failure to control simply meant the ball fell for Eto’o to strike in off a post.

Diego Milito wasted a good opportunity to add a third after latching on to Maicon’s pass on 25 minutes, failing to bury beyond Kidiaba with just the keeper to beat. The Argentina striker was denied again three minutes from half-time, Kidiaba’s right foot keeping the ball out on this occasion.

Inter continued to dominate after the break, though the African champions did finally call Julio Cesar into action with a Kazembe Mihayo effort. The Brazil No1 was needed again shortly afterwards as well, rushing out at the feet of Mazembe striker Dioko Kaluyituka.

Julio Cesar then prevented Kaluyituka from halving the deficit with ten minutes left, but Mazembe soon found themselves vulnerable to Inter on the counterattack. It was two second-half substitutes – Dejan Stankovic and Jonathan Biabiany – who combined to put the result beyond doubt, the French forward sprinting on to the midfielder’s pass before rounding Kidiaba.

“It is the fifteenth trophy of my career and I am really happy with a success that ends a fantastic year,” said Zanetti. “No Italian team has ever done what Inter have managed in 2010 and all the Inter fans should be proud of this side.”
