Ski: Vonn and Zurbriggen winners at Val d’Isere and Val Gardena

Lindsey Vonn wins the women’s downhill in Val d’Isere and in the men’s event Silvan Zurbriggen wins for Switzerland in Val Gardena, planetski.eu informs. For the US superstar skier it was her first Downhill win of the season. She beat the two Swiss racers, Nadja Kamer and Lara Gut, who came second and third. It was a great result for Gut who has been away with injury for almost a year and was suspended by her federation after she criticised staff on the team. Vonn’s main rival and good friend, Maria Reisch from Germany, had a poor day and finished well down the field in 24th place. “I love Val d’Isere, I’ve always had a good feeling here and it’s great to have another victory,” said Vonn after her win. “I made a big mistake at the top but I tried to make up time on the bottom, and I think I skied pretty well on the turns.”

The men have been racing over in Val Gardena Italy and the Swiss have done well. Last season the Swiss seemed invincible but this season they have not done so well. For Zurbriggen it is the first time he has even been on the podium in a World Cup Downhill race. The Austrian Romed Baumann came second. Austrian Michael Walchhofer claimed his second World Cup victory of the new season in the Super-G in Val Gardena on Friday. The veteran, who bagged the first downhill of the season in Lake Louise last month, defied poor visibility to clock one minute 34.35 seconds to win for the fourth time on his favourite Saslong slope.

The 35-year-old’s time was 0.67secs better than German Stephan Keppler, who claimed a first career podium, with world super-G champion Erik Guay in third place.
