Tourist killed by icicle on Transfagarasan

A tourist lost his life on the national road crossing over the Fagaras Mountains – Transfagarasan – on Sunday, being hit in the head by a large icicle coming off a concrete road protection cover. The head of the Arges Salvamont Service, Ion Sanduloiu, reports the accident occurred between the shelter from the 2000-metre point and the Balea tunnel, on a road segment that is close to traffic at winter time. The 43-year-old man who had gone up in the area with a group of friends was hit by a piece of ice that had come off a cover and sustained grievous head and chest injuries that killed him, according to the same source. The body of the tourist will be recovered by the mountain rescuers who will bring him down to the Piscu Negru area up to where the Transfagarasan road is open. (Agerpres)
