Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara thinks 2010 has been a complicated year for the Romanian agriculture, as the vegetal crops have been affected by adverse weather conditions both qualitatively and quantitatively, Mediafax reports. However, the Agriculture official said the wheat production was satisfactory, despite the bad conditions as 60-65 per cent of the 5.7 M tons were fit for bakery products. ‘The spring crop was as satisfactory, Romania being ranked second in Europe in terms of harvested corn production; unfortunately, the area covered by this crop has reduced by 1M hectares from 3.4 M hectares to 2.4 m HECATRES’, Minister Tabara noted. On the other hand, the MADR official stressed out that the 2010 production of potatoes and grapes, including those used in winemaking, has been poorer. As far as the animal breeding sector was concerned, the minister said agriculture continued to be one of the important branches supporting export, as the ovine sector also was. Unresolved shortcomings in 2010 are the poultry and pig sectors where steps are still being taken towards restoring intra-community export.
