Warmer temperatures, scattered showers on Christmas

After a week with very low temperatures and massive snowfall, the upcoming days will become warmer, specialists say. Although initially announced as a period of frost and snow, it looks like the initial Reading institute forecast for the month of December was right in foretelling mild winter throughout Romania, at least during Christmas time.

“On Wednesday and Thursday weather will gradually become warmer for this time of the year and the most dangerous phenomenon will be fog with temperatures reaching 12 C in southern areas,” said Alina Serban, ANM Institute spokeswoman in a meeting with local administration yesterday. In northern parts of the country highs will range between 5 and 9 C, while lows will not go under – 5 C in mountainous areas. In southern regions, there will be highs of 10 C.

Medium- span forecasts show weather will remain warm on Christmas Day. No snow will fall, except for very high altitudes. On Friday, rain will start falling over western and southern parts of the territory and fog will cause problems in traffic during Saturday morning. Another unwanted phenomenon will be glaze, caused by rain and lower temperatures during the night, but this will mainly affect mountainous areas. Urban areas will mainly remain affected by rain and fog. The warm wave will drift over Romania until December 27, when winter is again gripping over the territory with a wave of frost and snow, specialists warn. Temperatures will again reach -20 C and the days before New Year’s Eve will bring more snow in northern and central areas.
