The Romanian candidate to the European External Action Service (EEAS), Viorel Isticioaia Budura, was appointed coordinating director for Asia, Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative for External Affairs, announced, in an official EC release. “I am pleased to announce the appointment of another two coordinating directors within EEAS. Both Hugues (e.n Mingarelli) and Viorel (e.n. Isticioaia Budura) bring to the job their wide expertise on the countries and issues covered by their new portfolios. I am looking forward to working with them in the new Service,” Ashton stated. Mingarelli – acting, up to now, as Deputy Director General for External Affairs within the EC – was appointed coordinating director for the Middle East and the Southern Neighbourhood.
Last week, the Romanian Foreign Minister, Teodor Baconschi, announced that, according to some unofficial sources, the Romanian candidate to EEAS had been appointed coordinating director for Asia, and intimated the person in question was the diplomat initially denied the position of head of the EU delegation to Beijing, Viorel Isticioaia Budura.
