More than RON 6.6 M! This is the value of damages caused by the 10,500 sq m wide sinkhole which appeared last week in the town of Ocna Mures, destroying a supermarket and severely damaging a number of houses, blocks and institution offices. Monday, the Committee for Emergencies of Alba County proposed local authorities to seek financial support from the Government’s intervention fund, worth a total RON 12.7 M, for the Ocna Mures Local Council. More than half of this sum, over RON 6.5 M, represents the cost of filling the sinkhole with about 100,000 cubic meters (170,000 tons) of rock. Repairing the streets would take RON 2.4 M, building an alternate road of access into town (180-200 metres) would cost another RON 300,000, while RON 335,000 would serve to restore the damaged houses and private properties.
On December 22, a sinkhole with a diameter of 7-8 metres, filled with water, opened in the town of Ocna Mures, in a well field operated by the ‘Salina’ company, just 10 metres from a supermarket. Within hours, the surface of the crater had expanded to 10,500 sq m. The huge crater completely engulfed a supermarket and seriously damaged three houses – one of them was completely destroyed and two are about to collapse. Damages to the three houses were estimated at RON 325,000.
Experts evaluated the damages produced to six buildings at a total RON 3,678,721. The bulk of the sum – almost RON 3.2 M – represents the value of the supermarket and merchandise that fell into the sinkhole. Other damaged buildings are the local Fiscal Administration offices, the old medical dispensary and three company buildings.
