Economy Minister Ion Ariton made public that, starting next year, iron and steel plant Arcelor Mittal Galati will receive electricity generated by Hidroelectrica and several heat plants at a price similar to that paid by the by-now famous ‘smart guys’ from the power sector, namely at prices way below the market average, according to “Adevarul” daily newspaper. Arcelor put out an offer on the OPCOM energy bourse for purchasing 1,752,000 MWh of electricity at 130 RON/MWh, below the market average of 170 RON/MWh. As Hidroelectrica has already contracted out its hydro power, it will create an electricity basket at the price ArcelorMittral is willing to pay, with the auction to be held today. “If a deal is struck, all participant producers will sell for a profit, so that none of them would stand to lose from it,” Minister Ariton said in an “Adevarul” interview. He denied the solution was inspired by Cotroceni. Still, while on the B1 television programme “Nasul” (Godfather) Nov. 4, Traian Basescu blamed Hidroelectrica General manager Mihai David for not delivering electricity straight to such large consumers as Alro Slatina and ArcelorMittal Galati. Ion Ariton specified a similar system will also be applied to other such consumers, including Oltchim.
Also, the thermal power plants of Deva, Paroseni and Braila will be able to maintain a production level that would allow them to keep their current work force, “Adevarul” journalists write, quoting Economic Ministry sources.
