President awards honors to controversial former general prosecutor

President Traian Basescu decorated Ilie Botos, a former general prosecutor of Romania, the award of Order of the “Military Virtue”, the rank of Knight with military insignia. It was during Mr. Botos’ tenure as Romania’s general prosecutor (attorney general) that Omar Hayssam fled the country. The presidential decree was signed Dec. 20 and published in the Official Journal Dec. 27. According to the decree, quoted by Mediafax, the head of state decorated Ilie Botos, at the defence minister’s proposal, “as a sign of special appreciation for the high professionalism, dedication and devotion shown in fulfilling his job duties.” Ilie Botos was Romania’s prosecutor general during August 2003 – July 2006. He resigned his post after Omar Hayssam fled Romania. Botos was then transferred to the Defence Ministry and was appointed member of the General Directorate for Defence Intelligence.
