The spokesman for the presidency, Valeriu Turcan, was appointed presidential aide, by a decree signed by the president Traian Basescu, which takes effect as of January 1, 2011. Turcan held, up to now, the office of state counsellor in the Presidency’s Public Communication department, acting as spokesman for the head of state. According to the Presidency’s organization and operation statute, presidential aides have the rank of ministers, while state counsellors hold the rank of state secretaries.
The former spokesperson for the Presidency, Adriana Saftoiu, acted as a presidential aide. Turcan was the spokesman for the president in the campaign for the referendum on suspending the head of state.
