Just in: Basescu says bill extremely important for state reform

In a press statement at Cotroceni last evening, President Traian Basescu explained the reasons why he decided to promulgate the Education Law and underlined that promulgation of this bill is a very important moment for Romania’s reform as a whole.

He underlined that he had not only the constitutional, but also the political obligation to pass the bill, first of all because it was based on the Pact for Education signed by all political parties and civil society organisations. “What’s regrettable is that one of the first signers of the pact, Mircea Geoana, has become one of the fiercest opponents of the law,” he added. Moreover, he criticised unions and opposition representatives, including former Education Ministers Ecaterina Andronescu and Andrei Marga, for trying to disseminate false information about the bill and for opposing any attempts to change the current education system.
