Romania ranks bottom in FBI Top 10 cyber crime countries

Romania ranks 10th in a Top 10 standings by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of countries associated with cyber crimes, Antena 3 reports. Several hackers caught the attention of FBI agents after they managed to break the password of the NSA and the Pentagon. America appears to be the main target of Romanian hackers, with 260 persons arrested for online fraud in the year 2010 ended on November 30. More than 1300 criminal files were opened for cyber crimes during January-November of last year, according to ‘Gandul’. Also, a criminal ring was dismantled last December, having incurred damages worth EUR 11 M to telephone companies worldwide. Breaking into e-mail addresses is a rising form of criminal offence too. The highest-profile case is that of a galati resident who managed to extort 2000 USD from a US national, having broken into his e-mail address. Other notorious cases include that of an Arad native who cracked the Pentagon database and a Math Olympic laureate arrested in Italy for online frauds worth EUR 200,000 only to be recruited as an “online” policeman later on.
