Head of State seeks explanation about MAI scandal

President Traian Basescu called on the Interior Minister, Traian Igas, to dismiss the officials in the ministry who nominated for decoration two of the officers recently found guilty in the case of the positions illegally filled at the Gendarmerie. Basescu also asked for explanations regarding the procedures which precede such nominations. “Now, if you could do something about those nominated for a decoration. How were they nominated? Isn’t there a circuit? What’s everybody doing there?” Basescu asked Igas in Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. Two of the officers found guilty by the Interior Ministry (MAI)’s Control Corps in the context of a scandal surrounding the filling of officers’ positions at the Gendarmerie were decorated by the head of state, at the end of last year. Interior Minister, Traian Igas, dismissed from office the director general of MAI’s Human Resources Management Department, Adrian Patrascu, after the Ministry’s Control Corps found irregularities in the manner in which the Gendarmerie had unblocked three officers’ positions and had organized, in October 2010, the contest for the filling thereof. At the same time, the prime deputy chief of the Romanian Gendarmerie, the brigadier general Gheorghe Nicolaie Rugina, is to be investigated, in the same case, by MAI’s Judicial Council.
