Six Romanians on main table at Australian Open

Romania’s Irina Begu and Madalina Gojnea were defeated on Sunday morning in the first qualifier round counting for the Australian Open, the year’s first Grand Slam tournament set to start today in Melbourne. Britain’s Anne Keothavong defeated Begu, score 6-3, 6-4, while Germany’s Kathrin Woerle defeated Madalina Gojnea, score 6-3, 6-4. Romania is left with six representatives on the singles main tables. Romania has five representatives in the women’s singles event, with Alexandra Dulgheru being the best-ranking among them (top seed 27). The 21-year-old Romanian player will play against Japan’s Ayumi Morita in the first round. Monica Niculescu has a difficult upcoming game against Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky (50th in WTA standings), while Edina Gallovits will play against Germany’s Julia Gorges (38th WTA). Simona Halep will go up against a player coming from qualifiers, while Sorana Carstea will play against Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic. Victor Hanescu, the only Romanian in the men’s singles event, will play against America’s Mardy Fish (top seed 16).
