Gendarmerie heads sacked

The head of the Romanian Gendarmerie, Lieutenant General Olimpiador Antonescu, his second-in-command, Brigadier General Nicolae Rugina and other six top employees were dismissed from office yesterday. Minister of Administration and Internal Affairs, Traian Igas took the decision following the scandal surrounding the illegal hiring spree at the Romanian Gendarmerie. The state secretary in the Interior Minister, Ioan Dascalu, announced late on Monday that Prosecutor’s Office started a criminal investigation against Olimpiodor Antonescu and Nicolae Rugina.

On January 3, the Interior Minister notified the Prosecutor’s Office’s over the way in which the Gendarmerie had unblocked three officer-rank positions and had organized the contest to fill them.
