President’s impeachment – one of the stakes behind Constitutional revision

The stake behind the Constitutional revision is very important, just like modifying the electoral laws is, President Basescu recently bringing back into the debate his plan to revise the Constitution in order to limit the number of MPs to 300 and to introduce the single chamber Parliament. ‘Jurnalul National’ daily wrote yesterday that one of the stakes, which goes beyond the 2009 referendum, consists of changing the impeachment procedure, Traian Basescu seeking to take this prerogative away from Parliament and to give it to the Constitutional Court where ruling coalition partners PDL and UDMR hold the majority. “The impeachment procedure has to be kept, but political responsibility is needed. The Constitutional Court should rule on the decision to impeach the President – that’s a solution. Or after the Parliament’s decision we should go to a referendum and if people vote to keep the President in office then the Parliament will be dissolved,” President Basescu recently stated.
