Dr. Michael Shafir, International Relations professor with the ‘Babes Bolyai’ University (UBB) of Cluj-Napoca, announced he will return to President Traian Basescu the ‘Education Merit’ order with the rank of officer, in protest against the new Law of Education. According to a press release issued by UBB Cluj-Napoca, the president bestowed the medal on the professor in October 2009. “The new law politicizes Education, while pretending the contrary. If we got used to stagnation presented as reform in Romania so far, now we are witnessing a regress hidden behind the same kind of speech. This negates the autonomy of universities and politicizes the Education sector, both in schools and in higher education institutions,” the professor says.
