Eckstein Kovacs files candidacy for UMDR leadership

The presidential adviser Peter Eckstein Kovacs filed, on Wednesday, at the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR)’s Executive Presidium office in Cluj-Napoca, his candidacy for party leadership, Mediafax reports. Eckstein voiced his hope of winning the internal elections in the Union as his program is addressed to the UDMR members who are keen to see changes in the party. Eckstein came to file his candidacy accompanied by members of the UDMR Cluj organization, which backs his candidacy.

The leader of the UDMR deputies, Olosz Gergely, filed his candidacy for the party president office on Monday, while the minister of Culture, Kelemen Hunor, filed his on Tuesday.

Eckstein Kovacs’s electoral program revolves around the target of autonomy. The presidential aide voiced his conviction that “granting wider self-determination prerogatives” to the Szeklers’ County would boost the region’s economic standing, according to “Adevarul”. The aspiring party president argued that “the territorial autonomy project should be embraced by all the inhabitants of the region, be they Hungarians, Romanians or Roma.”
