Football Asian Cup 2011: Australia – Japan in the final

Japan beat South Korea after spot-kicks in the semi-finals of the 2011 Asian Cup and Yasuyuki Konno, who scored the decisive penalty, was obviously over the moon with his side’s hard fought victory.

“This is the greatest. If we had lost, it would’ve been the worst. This is probably the best birthday I’ve ever had in the 28 years of my life. I mean, I won the game with my penalty. I would much rather celebrate the victory than my birthday,” said Konno to fifa.com.

Japan will now take on Australia on Saturday in the final.

Australia coach Holger Osieck believes there will not be as many goals against Japan in the Asian Cup final as there was against semi-finalists Uzbekistan. The Socceroos defeated the Uzbeks 6-0 to book their place in the tournament’s final.

“I don’t think there will be many goals scored against Japan,” he exclusively declared to Goal.com. “If we score 1-0 against Japan in the finals, I will be happy. “Back home, it is Australia Day. This result should give the fans a reason to celebrate big at home,” concluded Osieck.
