Funeriu accused of preferential financing

Education Minister Daniel Funeriu is blamed of having directed substantial funding “into useless investments made under at least dubious circumstances” to the “Aurel Vlaicu” University, where his father, Ionel Funeriu, is a professor, and also known as a good friend of the institution’s rector, Lizica Mihut, according to the “Jurnalul National” daily newspaper. The Education Ministry distributed a total of RON 19 M to the institution of higher learning.

Ministerial Adviser Tudorel Urican denied the accusations. Further more, both Urican and officials at the “Aurel Vlaicu” University maintain that the ministry-allotted funds were fourfold lower actually than those in 2008, which could be proved with documents. “In 2010, the University of Arad ranked 33rd of 42 universities, and therefore such allegation doesn’t stand up to the figures presented, which are absolutely official,” Urican told “Jurnalul National”.
