Drivers – to buy winter or all-season tires, Gov’t decides

Drivers will be forced to use winter or all-season tires during the winter season starting on November 2011, Mediafax informs. Otherwise they will receive fines ranging from RON 2,500 to RON 4,000, Transport Minister Anca Boagiu announced on Wednesday evening. Vehicles heavier than 3.5 tons and transport vehicles with a capacity larger than 9 seats will have to be fitted with winter tires and/or to use chains or other licensed anti-skidding devices. Asked by journalists whether a driver using chains still has to use winter tires, Minister Boagiu answered that the obligation to use winter tires is in force when driving on public roads that are not covered in snow.
