Ilie Nastase: “Romanians lack winner’s mentality”

In an interview for ‘Evenimentul Zilei’ daily, former tennis player Ilie Nastase expressed his concern for the future of Romanian sports, stating that apart from the absence of optimal training facilities Romanian athletes also lack a winner’s mentality. “I believe Romanians are the least united and ambitious people! From politicians to common people, we only know how to mock things. Look at Romanian football, given that it’s so much under the media’s spotlight, what else is there to see apart from circus and mockery? OK, Djokovic laughs and makes jokes now and then, but when it comes to working he works hard, and the results show it. It probably has to do with mentality, I’m no longer sure what to believe,” Nastase pointed out. The former great champion of the 1960s-1970s was also president of the Romanian Tennis Federation but now no longer wants to have anything to do with this sport at official level, being disappointed with some of the accusations brought against him while he was heading the Federation. “When I got involved in the Romanian world of tennis I had all kinds of problems and I was accused of embezzlement. At this moment I am retired for good, I no longer have anything to do with this sport. I still watch a game, I still watch a tournament, but that is the only connection I still have with tennis. I no longer want to get involved in any form,” Nastase concluded.
