Lowest temperature this year: -26.8 degrees C

The lowest temperature in the country was reported on Tuesday morning in Intorsura Buzaului, Covasna County (-26.8 degrees Celsius). Severe cold was reported in Sfantu Gheorghe and Baraolt too (-22 degrees). The month of February started with low temperatures throughout the country. “There were -26 degrees at Intorsura Buzaului. Tomorrow morning (today, Wednesday – editor’s note) temperatures below freezing will be reported in most of the country. On Thursday morning there will be -15 to -5 degrees. Temperatures of -20 degrees will be reported in eastern Transylvania. The situation will remain unchanged on Friday, with lower temperatures in Transylvanian mountain basins.

The weather will be warmer on Wednesday, 5-6 degrees, in southern areas and on plateaus. The sky will be temporarily clouded on Thursday to Friday in north-west regions. There will be isolated snowfalls. Those will be the first precipitations in the first ten days of the month,” Silviu Grigore, Realitatea TV meteorologist, stated. Severe cold has killed over 25 people so far this winter. Dozens others suffered frostbites.
Fog hampered road traffic in several regions yesterday. Roads in Gorj, Prahova, Ialomita and Buzau Counties were most affected, visibility dropping below 50 meters. According to the Infotrafic centre, traffic was also hampered on A2 Highway’s Lehliu-Drajna section (visibility below 150 meters).
