Artists invited to submit 2012 London Cultural Olympiad projects

The Romanian Culture Institute has recently launched a public challenge for local or international cultural institutions to come up with projects for 2012’s London Cultural Olympiad event. The contest running until March 6 , is open to independent art workers and institutions and aims to put together an ambitious Romanian display of events.

To qualify for selection, the project ideas must be made according to several criteria: the cultural event must be conceived for public spaces performance, it should make use of new technologies, must encourage public’s participation and last but not least, it should reflect Olympic Games values and tradition.
Leading artists from all over the world will come together in the UK’s biggest ever festival, a chance for everyone to celebrate London 2012 through dance, music, theatre, the visual arts, film and digital innovation. The culmination of the Cultural Olympiad, the Festival will open on 21 June 2012 and it will run until 9 September 2012 – the last day of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. At the heart of the festival will be a programme of commissions by some of the finest artists in the world in events ranging from pop to film, from visual arts and fashion to theatre, from circus to carnival, from opera to digital innovation. The first commissions include works from the likes of Akram Khan, Cate Blanchett, Mike Leigh and Damon Albarn. In total, the festival will feature more than 1,000 events, with an estimated audience of more than three million people.
