Romanian films competing in Mons

“Wedding in Basarabia,” by Napoleon Helmis, “Europolis” by Cornel Gheorghita and “Eva” by Adrian Popovici have been selected to participate in the Mons International Love Film Festival (MILFF) in Belgium, according to a Romanian Cultural Release communiqué. “Europolis” has been selected as part of the European debut section, alongside ten other films, including Italy’s “Hai paura del buio”. With a pedigree of countless international festivals, “Wedding in Basarabia” centers on a newlywed couple expecting a baby, who don’t have money to buy their own home. The pair decides to have a second marriage in native Basarabia where they could receive abundant presents of cash. The second wedding becomes a competition between Romanian and Moldovan customs, traditions and political backgrounds. A UK- Romania coproduction, “Eva” tells the story of a young woman living in an Europe torn apart by World War II.

The film features UK actors Amy Beth Hayes, Corin Redgrave and Patrick Bergin and Romanian acclaimed actress Maia Morgenstern. Also selected in the shorts’ section will be Paul Negoescu’s “Derby.” The 27th edition of Mons International Festival will kick off on February 18 and will conclude on the 25th.
