Fifteen weapons – 5 AKM machineguns and ten handguns – stolen from the Ciorogarla army base in December 2009 have been found in the home belonging to underworld member Eugen Preda’s grandparents in Salciile commune, Ialomita County, the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) informed yesterday. In March 2010 investigators found in the Bacu-Dragomiresti area one weapon from the batch of weapons stolen from Ciorogarla. In December 2009 the Bucharest Court decided to arrest 14 persons charging them with the weapons’ theft and with drug trafficking. Eugen Preda was one of those 14. On the other hand, on March 2, 2010, 11 soldiers were deferred to court in the stolen weapons’ case, being convicted to prison terms ranging from 6 months to 15 years. According to the prosecutors, the soldiers guarding the army base failed to verify the existence and integrity of the arms depot’s locks, illegally left their watch posts or failed to man the watch posts. The weapons and objects stolen from the arms depot total RON 34,500. After the theft Defence Minister Mihai Stanisoara relieved of duty several high ranking officers. Air Force Chief General Constantin Croitoru and Brigadier General Ion Ungureanu, head of the Ministry’s counter-intelligence and security direction, were among those relieved of duty.
