32 of the 35 persons detained for cigarette trafficking, tax dodging and the illegal selling of excise products were placed under preventive arrest on the night from Wednesday to Thursday, while three others will be prosecuted without being held in custody but are not allowed to leave the locality. The Arges Court’s decision is not final, with the Pitesti Court of Appeals set to rule on any appeals filed against it. One of the three persons prosecuted without being held in custody was taken to hospital on Wednesday evening before the ruling was made, complaining of a poor state of health. 71 persons suspected of cigarette smuggling were arrested following the police raids that targeted homes in Bucharest and the Arges, Giurgiu, Dambovita, Dolj, Olt, Ilfov, Galati, Maramures, Suceava, Arad and Timis Counties on Tuesday. The searches netted over 300,000 cigarette packs with a total value of over RON 500,000, white weapons, police lights and sirens.
