Senate Speaker Mircea Geoana said on Realitatea TV, on Saturday, that after he had ‘won’ the presidential election, he would still like to try to become head of state again.’ ‘How could I say I wouldn’t like to give it one more try, after I have already won the presidential election? I have a duty to try,’ Geoana said. His statement however is against the position of the Social-Liberal Union, which, in principle, would agree to support a presidential candidacy of PNL leader Crin Antonescu and PSD leader Victor Ponta for PM. Moreover, Geoana says the USL protocol does not mention who the candidates for president and PM would be. ‘PSD will have a congress to decide the PM candidate. Indeed, the party president had an obvious entitlement as well as an advantage in that respect. But to say now that Ponta or Antonescu will definitely be prime-minister or president would be far too premature,’ said the Senate Speaker. Sources quoted by realitatea.net say Geoana is, in fact, negotiating with Gabriel Oprea his joining UNPR and that he goes public with statements on his intention to run for president exactly in order to guise his recent moves. One of the main conditions was total support for the position as Senate Speaker, after the Power gained control over the Standing Bureau of the upper chamber.
