Political sources quoted by daily ‘Gandul’ said President Basescu had last night a meeting with Democrat Liberal Party branch leaders. The meeting was kept secret both by PDL leaders and the presidential administration. PM Boc participated at the meeting as well. According to sources close to the party, quoted by Medifax, the PDL leadership together with Basescu were trying to find ‘an independent PM’ to replace Boc. Basescu announced last week that he was willing to have talks with all branch leaders, in the context of PDL’s upcoming internal elections, scheduled mid May. Moreover, he voiced discontent with how some of the party’s ‘heavyweights’ are acting ahead of the election and the statements they make. Meanwhile, several voices in the party are pleading in favour of separating the party leader job from the PM post. If such a provision is enforced, current party leader Emil Boc would see himself forced to choose the PM job and not seek re-election as PDL president. Both vice president Cristian Boureanu and deputy secretary general Gheorghe Flutur yesterday said such a separation of duties would be useful and should be taken into consideration.
Prior to meeting PDL leadership, Basescu had a long discussion with the governor of the Central Bank, Mugur Isarescu. There was no immediate information from the meeting, which was not previously announced by the presidential administration.
