Romanian employees, less qualified than the Vietnamese, Pakistanis, Chileans

According to a survey conducted by American consultancy company A.T. Kearney, Romanian employees are poorly qualified compared to employees in other countries, especially in what concerns outsourcing (call centres, technical support centres, IT support centres), Realitatea.net informs. The survey looked at foreign language skills, education, experience and labour force availability. Romania scored 3.42 points, ranking below Vietnam (3.96), Chile (4.22), Philippines (4.38), Argentina (5.26) and Singapore (5.54). The best ranking emerging countries are India (9.2), China (8.5) and Brazil (6.9).

Although salaries dropped in Romania in the last two years, our country lost its outsourcing attractiveness, dropping from 19th to 25th place in the table compiled by A.T. Kearney. Romania was surpassed by countries such as Costa Rica, Estonia, Latvia and Russia. “The economic recession has brought about a negative perception on relocating to countries whose labour force is cheaper,” the survey shows. The main explanation for this phenomenon is the rise of unemployment in developed economies. The businesses that want to relocate outside their home country are facing stiff internal resistance from trade unions and public opinion.

Moreover, in the absence of concrete employment opportunities tens of thousands of students and college graduates are competing for internships in MNCs. They seek to tally at least 2-3 months of practical experience and hope to get a concrete employment offer at the end of their internships. Companies that offer internships are receiving up to 1,000 CVs for a single opening. “Over 50,000 youngsters applied for an internship last year,” Delia Moreanu, PR Specialist within Catalyst Solutions, stated. On average, according to Catalyst’s data, only 10 per cent of the youngsters that apply are selected for an internship.
