Opposition: No plans to impeach president yet

The secretaries general of the Social-Democrat Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL), Liviu Dragnea and Radu Stroe, stated, yesterday, that the Social-Liberal Union (USL) was not considering, as yet, the option of initiating impeachment procedure against the president Traian Basescu. Furthermore, Dragnea also remained reserved on the possibility that USL should initiate a no-confidence vote against the Government after the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) Congress, to take place at the end of this month. “We will discuss this when the time is right. I would say rather we stop speaking of possibilities, opportunities, potentialities. When we feel the odds are right for a no-confidence vote to pass, we will file one,” Dragnea stated, quoted by Mediafax. On the same day, PSD Senator Georgica Severin stated that a political opportunity to initiate the impeachment procedure would be offered once the opposition secures the 236 votes needed. “PSD will not turn the impeachment of the president into an end in itself. As long as he abides by the Constitution, there won’t be any call for that,” Severin added.
