Vintu is seeking allies against Basescu

Less than a week after publicly threatening he would initiate a vicious war against Traian Basescu, billionaire Sorin Ovidiu Vintu made a first move, meant to consolidate his footing in his confrontation with the Romanian president, “National” argues, in its online edition. Thus, according to the aforementioned source, secret negotiations were held, the other day, between Dragos Nedelcu, the deputy president of the Realitatea group, owned by SOV, and the Greek tycoon Spiros Latsis, who is, allegedly, entrusted with the task of buying a minority share package in the Realitatea TV group, on behalf of his business partner, Vagit Alekperov. Latsis is, reportedly, at the moment, the wealthiest Greek businessman, with a fortune estimated at USD 11 bln, and Alekperov is the founder and co-owner of Lukoil, with a fortune estimated at USD 10.6 bln. Sources quoted by “National” claim that, following talks, Sorin Ovidiu Vintu allegedly agreed that this transaction should be operated as soon as possible. By this move, SOV means to team up with some of the most influential entrepreneurs in Eastern Europe, people whose influence would give him the upper hand in the war against president Basescu, the aforementioned paper argues. Alekperov is, reportedly, interested in purchasing, via the selfsame Latsis, a significant share package in Romgaz, the most lucrative Romanian company, in which the Romanian state is the majority shareholder.
