First kidney transplant between twins

A medical team of the ‘Fundeni’ Center of Urologic Surgery, Dialysis and Kidney Transplant performed, first time in Romania, a kidney transplant between twin brothers, aged 42. The surgery was achieved by a team led by Prof. Ionel Sinescu, the manager of the Fundeni Center. According to medical sources, one of the twins had a kidney failure and risked a complete kidney blockage that would have made him dependent of dialysis for the rest of his life. To avoid this, doctors decided to transplant him a kidney from his identical twin brother. As this was a transplant between twins (donor-transplantee) with 100 pc compatibility, there was no need for immunosuppressive medication, as the immunological risk was zero in this case. Since June 1997, the Fundeni Center made a record number of transplants, 80 pc of them with kidneys from live donors and 20 pc with kidneys from clinically dead donors.
