Farmers’ federations call on Presidency to devise strategy for agriculture

The National Federation of Romanian Agricultural Producers (FNPAR) and the Agrostar federation call on the president Traian Basescu to “revitalize” the presidential committee for agriculture, which should devise a strategy for this sector, Mediafax reports. According to the federations, their request comes as a consequence of the Ministry of Agriculture’s “failure to draw up a coherent strategy”, to encourage the recovery of agriculture. “Thus, we reached a point at which, in 2011 Romania, there are approximately 3 million hectares of farming land left untilled. Average produce from farmed land amount to about 3 tonnes of wheat per hectare, approx. 4 tonnes of corn per hectare, and about 1.6 tonnes per hectare for Cole and sunflower,” is stated in a release signed by the two federations.
