FM Baconschi pays visit to Israel, Palestinian Authority

Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Baconschi will pay an official visit to Israel today and then to the National Palestinian Authority on March 1, according to a press release from the ministry. The visit to Israel is made upon the invitation of FM and Deputy PM Avigdor Lieberman. During his visit, Baconschi will have meetings with Israeli President Shimon Peres, his counterpart and PM Benjamin Netanyahu, but also with the head of the Knesset’s foreign affairs committee, Shaul Mofaz and opposition leader Tzipi Livni. The visit’s agenda also includes a visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum, where Minister Baconschi will lay a wreath of flowers. The foreign minister will also meet with leading representatives of the community of Romanian-born Israeli citizens and prominent members of the business environment.

In Ramallah, Baconschi will be received by the head of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation’s Executive Committee and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, but also by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and his Palestinian counterpart Riyad Al-Malki. Talks with Palestinian officials will focus on bilateral cooperation prospects, especially in the field of economy, Romania’s possibility of contributing to Palestinian institutions’ construction and recent evolutions in North Africa and the Middle East.
