Astra, No. 1 in insurers’ ranking

Astra Asigurari reported, last year, gross premiums of RON 1.11 bln, rising by 37 pc compared to 2009, figures which entitle the company to the top position in the insurance companies’ ranking, and net earnings of RON 21.49 M, rising from RON 6.2 M in the preceding year. “We have managed to expand and to consolidate the business at a critical time for the economy at large. Unfortunately, there is as yet no sign that better times will come for the insurance market in Romania. Even under these circumstances, Astra Asigurari set out, in 2011, to boost its life insurance and healthcare sectors, as well as the property insurance sector,” Radu Mustatea, President of the company’s Executive, stated, in a release. In the general insurance sector, gross premiums subscribed amount to RON 1.095 bln. Car insurances brought the company RON 863.9, rising by 49 pc as compared to 2009, out of which RON 600.2 M represent RCA policies (rising by 110 pc). The goods and buildings’ insurance sector accounts for 13 pc of the company’s portfolio, amounting to RON 145.5 M, rising by 7 pc compared to 2009. Damages paid by the company reported a 60 pc rise, compared to 2009, in the interval January-December 2010, from RON 327,662,126, in 2009, to RON 525,000,344, in 2010.
