Former boxer Ion Monea dies at 70

Former Romanian boxer Ion Monea has succumbed to a lung infection on Tuesday evening. He was 70. Monea won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 and a silver medal in Ciudad de Mexico in 1978. Ion Monea was born on November 30, 1940, in Tohanu Vechi, Brasov County. His career also includes six national titles, three consecutive Balkan titles and he was twice European runner-up. After retiring he became a coach within Dinamo Sports Club. In 2000 he was awarded the “Faithful Service” National Cross. “It’s a great loss, he was like a father for me,” Rudel Obreja, President of the Romanian Boxing Federation, stated for ‘ProSport.’
