Only 27.37 pc of transport companies in Romania operate legally

The Romanian Federation of Transport Operators (FORT) argues that, out of the 115,000 passengers’ and freight transport companies registered in Romania, only 31,481 operate in legal conditions, Realitatea.net reports. As a consequence, FORT calls on the Romanian Government to approve, in emergency procedure, the fuel excise tax return for Romanian licensed freight and passengers’ transporters, following the model already applied, successfully, in many European countries, such as Spain, Slovenia, and, as of January 1, Hungary. “The application of such a measure has a double effect on the economy, as it manages to balance the costs between Romanian and European transporters and, at the same time, it encourages illegal transporters to join the loyal competition area, thus reducing tax evasion in the transport sector, which amounted to over EUR 1 bln, last year alone,” representatives of the transporters argued.
