Costel Casuneanu free to leave the country

Businessman Costel Casuneanu who is on trial for corruption along with Senator Catalin Voicu is free to leave the country following the ruling passed by the Criminal Department of the Supreme Court yesterday, Mediafax informs. The decision can be appealed by the anti-corruption prosecutors. Costel Casuneanu’s lawyer defended his request by the fact that the ban on leaving the country was hurting his client ‘both personally and professionally, as he is a businessman’. Judge Florin Costiniu and businessmen Costel Casuneanu and Marius Locic were referred to court by the DNA prosecutors in Senator Catalin Voicu’s corruption case. According to the prosecution papers, Voicu received from Costel Casuneanu RON 250,000 (the equivalent of EUR 60,000) and EUR 200,000, promising to convince High Court magistrates (Florin Costiniu, President of the Civil Department – our note) to pass a decision in favour of the company in which the businessman in question was a partner.
