The four banks of organs and tissues that are to be set up in Bucharest, Targu Mures, Timisoara and Iasi may become functional at the end of the year or early next year at the latest, National Transplant Agency adviser Andrei Nica told a press conference yesterday. Nica added, quoted by Mediafax, that the necessary funding for the four banks, of EUR 3.5 M, is available and will include personnel training expenses. He also said that construction works on the Targu Mures bank of organs and tissues may begin this autumn. The bank will include several types of tissues, including bone, tendon, cornea, cardiac valve, skin and amniotic membrane. On the other hand, Nica said the number of organ donors registered in Timisoara in the first few months of the year is a European record. “Nationwide, there are about 20 real donors at the moment and most of them, ten, are from Timisoara. (…) We used to have a maximum of seven,” he added.
